W. Tennis Set for ITA Regional Championships
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Five members of the University of Miami women’s tennis team will open play Friday at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships Presented by Oracle.
Held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., the tournament features players from 17 schools across Florida and Georgia.
Sophomores Sara Culbertson, Dominika Paterova and Estela Perez-Somarriba, junior Ana Madcur and freshman Ulyana Shirokova will represent the Hurricanes in the field. All five are in the 64-player singles main draw, while Perez-Somarriba and Madcur team up in the 32-team doubles main draw, too.
Play will begin at 9 a.m., with the Miami doubles duo taking on Victoria Flores and Nami Otsuka of Georgia Tech. Madcur and Perez-Somarriba are seeded sixth in the field.
No. 11 Perez-Somarriba is the top seed in the singles draw and opens play against UCF’s Maria Martinez at 11 a.m. Paterova will make her fall debut at noon versus seventh-seeded Katarina Jokic of Georgia.
Shirokova takes on UCF’s Emilia Granstrom at 12:30 p.m., Culbertson squares off with Stetson’s Lucie Renault at 1 p.m., and Madcur meets Lara Vovk of Georgia State at 2 p.m.
Friday will feature one round of doubles action and two rounds of singles action. The earliest start time for the second round of singles competition is 2:30 p.m.
