Berrios Named CoSIDA Academic All-American

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami senior wide receiver Braxton Berrios earned 2017 first-team CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Football honors Thursday, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Boasting a nearly perfect 3.96 GPA, Berrios is the leading receiver for the No. 10 Hurricanes, who will be playing sixth-ranked Wisconsin in the Capital One Orange Bowl on Dec. 30. The Raleigh, N.C., native graduated Thursday with a double-major in finance and entrepreneurship.

Berrios was named the recipient of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Jim Tatum Award, given to the top football scholar-athlete in the conference, on Nov. 30. Berrios, who was named the 2015-16 Miami Scholar-Athlete of the Year, also received the football team’s 2016 Mariutto Family Scholar-Athlete Award. A Dean’s List member every semester of his college career, Berrios earned President’s List honors three times and was named to the Provost’s Honor Roll seven times.

Berrios has 52 receptions this season for a team-high 634 yards and nine touchdowns, while his 16.2-yard punt return average stands as one of the best marks nationwide. He earned ACC Receiver of the Week honors after his multi-touchdown performance in Miami’s win over rival Florida State on Oct. 7.

Berrios is the first Hurricane football player to earn first-team CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors since defensive lineman Matt Walters in 2002.

No less than 33 of the 50 members of the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Football Team have at least a 3.90 GPA, with 14 student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 GPA as either undergraduate or graduate students. The 25 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.94.

CoSIDA began the distinguished Academic All-America® program in 1952, and since then, has honored thousands of deserving student-athletes from numerous sports across all divisions with these elite Academic All-America® scholar-athlete honors. The Academic All-America® program is comprised of four divisional teams, with student-athletes being honored separately in NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III.
