Herndon One to Watch for Mackey Award

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Senior Christopher Herndon IV was among those players named to the preseason watch list for the 2017 Mackey Award honoring the nation’s most outstanding collegiate tight end, it was announced Tuesday.

Herndon is the fourth Hurricane to earn preseason accolades, joining junior defensive lineman Kendrick Norton (Bednarik Award), sophomore linebacker Shaquille Quarterman (Bednarik Award) and junior running back Mark Walton (Maxwell Award).

A Norcross, Ga., native, Herndon made 12 starts last season for the Hurricanes and caught 28 passes totaling 334 yards. Herndon averaged 11.9 yards per reception and hauled in two receiving touchdowns in 2016. In three seasons with the Hurricanes, Herndon has totaled 46 receptions, 571 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Herndon is looking to become the second Hurricane to ever win the Mackey Award; Kellen Winslow II earned the honor in 2003.

The award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the 2017 Mackey Award recipient will be announced on December 6, 2017 and then presented live on December 7, 2017 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU.
