Jackson Named To The Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami defensive lineman Demetrius Jackson is one of 108 student-athletes tabbed to the Watch List for the 2017 Wuerffel Trophy.

Jackson, who last week was selected as a nominee to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, is an active member in the Miami community and was a recipient of the ACC Top Six Award for Service in 2016. Jackson established a community group called Young Men of Tomorrow, an organization which aims to help young kids make good choices in school and in the community.

In addition, the redshirt junior has made multiple community outreach visits to Carver Elementary School as part of the football team’s community outreach program. He also has assisted with local parades in the Miami neighborhood of Overtown and spent dozens of hours with children at the Boys and Girls Club of Miami.

Following the 2016 season, Jackson was honored with the Hurricanes’ Community Service Man of the Year Award.

On the field in 2016, Jackson saw action in 11 games and made a single-season best six starts. He also totaled single-season bests in tackles (28) and sacks (2.5).

The Wuerffel Trophy, known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service,” is presented annually by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.  Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

Voting for the Wuerffel Trophy is performed by a National Selection Committee that includes college football television and print media, industry notables, former head coaches and prior Wuerffel Trophy recipients.
