LOUISVILLE, Ky. For the third time this season, the University of Miami soccer team came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision.

Miami (4-4-0, 0-2-0 ACC) conceded a Louisville goal in the closing minutes Sunday afternoon at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium and could not find a late equalizer.

“Today was very disappointing, as we didn’t play as a team,” Miami head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said. “Our back line and Phallon [Tullis-Joyce] did a very good job and played well.”

Both teams had their best chance of a scoreless opening half off a set piece in the attacking third in a span of just four minutes.

Miami junior defender Maisie Baker played a splendid free kick towards the far post from about 35 yards out in the 10th minute. The ball made its way towards an open, charging Lexi Castellano, but went just inches beyond her head and sailed out of bounds.

In the 13th minute, Louisville (7-4-0, 1-2-0 ACC) freshman midfielder Emina Ekic drove a free kick on frame from approximately 10 yards beyond the box. Tullis-Joyce, Miami’s redshirt junior goalkeeper, made an outstanding leaping save to knock the ball over the ball to keep the Cardinals off the board.

Sophomore forward Bayleigh Chaviers made a superb play in the 55th minute, deflecting away a shot in the box by Louisville freshman midfielder/forward Taylor Kerwin that was headed towards the back of the open.

The Cardinals notched the lone goal of the day in the 83rd minute on an unassisted strike by Emina Ekic on a shot from the top of the box.

Despite pushing numbers forward in the waning minutes, the Hurricanes were unable to find an answer to pull level down the stretch. It marked the second time in four days Miami has dropped a 1-0 result.

Freshman defender Morgan Asmussen, on her 18th birthday, made her collegiate debut Sunday, while junior forward/midfielder saw her first action of the season.

Friday, the Hurricanes will play their first home match since Aug. 18, when they host No. 19 Clemson at 7 p.m., at Cobb Stadium.
