Wimbley and Okieme Shine at USATF Indoors

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Former University of Miami track and field standouts Shakima Wimbley and Tiffany Okieme were among the top performers at the 2018 USATF Indoor Championships over the weekend.

Wimbley proved to be one of the top sprinters in the country, while Okieme showed her prowess in the throws. The Hurricane pair competed against the best track and field athletes in the United States at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M.

Wimbley opened competition on Saturday, running the fastest time of any woman in the 400m semifinals. The 2017 NCAA champion in the indoor 400m posted a then-season-best time of 5139 seconds to earn one of the eight spots in Sunday’s final.

Wimbley continued her success on the track in Sunday’s final finishing second with a season-best time of 51.17 seconds that was one-hundredth of a second behind champion Courtney Okolo. Her second place finish earned Wimbley a spot on the USA World Championship team that will compete at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Great Britain from March 1-4.

Okieme also had an excellent showing on Sunday, finishing fourth in the women’s weight throw. The former All-ACC performer posted a mark of 23.42m on her second attempt of the competition and that throw gave her a spot in the top 4.
