Men's Tennis Breaks Into Nation's Top 50

CORAL GABLES, Fla.  Following sweeps of William & Mary and Cleveland State Sunday, the University of Miami men’s tennis team is ranked No. 50 in the latest Oracle/ITA rankings.

The Hurricanes (8-5, 0-3 ACC) outscored their opponents 12-0 in the doubleheader and dominated both matches to accumulate a set differential of 23-2 at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

Miami is in the national ranking for the first time since April 5, 2016. Back then, Miami checked in as No. 75 in the then-top 75 national rankings.

“It’s great for our guys to break into the national rankings. They are working hard,” Miami head coach Aljosa Piric said. “We keep talking about staying the course and trusting the work; this ranking tells them that they are on the right path. We need to continue to improve and continue to work towards the high goals we have for our program.”

Miami breaks into the top 50 of the nation for the first time since April 15, 2014, when it was ranked No. 47. That year, the Hurricanes were nationally-ranked eight times, checking in as high as No. 39 on March 25. Miami finished the 2014 season with a 14-11 (4-7 ACC) record.

The Canes are one of eight ACC teams in the rankings this week, led by No. 1 Wake Forest and No. 5 North Carolina. Four ACC teams – No. 16 NC State, No. 17 Duke, No. 18 Notre Dame and No. 19 Florida State – were ranked back-to-back this week, while Clemson jumped 12 spots to enter this week’s matches at No. 36.

Miami has five matches against teams currently ranked on its remaining ACC slate, starting with the top-ranked Demon Deacons on March 23.

The Canes will continue their two-week break from conference play this week and will travel to Orlando, Fla., to take on UCF at the USTA National Campus Sunday at 1 p.m.
