Rowing Kicks Off Cardinal Invitational

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — The University of Miami rowing team kicked off its spring season at the 2018 Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational Saturday.
 
The Canes raced out of Lane 6 in the Saturday morning session, competing against Virginia, Yale and Michigan State. Miami’s Varsity Eight will be the first boat in the water, finishing fourth with a time of 6:26.823. The Varsity Four also was fourth with a time of 7:14.669, while the Third Varsity Eight was fifth with a time of 7:02.476. The Hurricanes’ Second Varsity 8 also finished fourth in their opening race, crossing the finish line in 6:41.029, while the Second Varsity Four placed fourth with a time of 7:13.691.
 
Miami returned to the water Saturday afternoon, racing out of Lane 3 against Notre Dame, Virginia and Tulsa. The Varsity Eight kicked off the afternoon session, finishing third with a time of 6:21.399. Miami’s Varsity Four was second in the afternoon session, posting a time of 7:20.104, while the Third Varsity Eight was third in its race with a time of 7:22.562. The Canes’ Second Varsity Eight was fourth in its race with a time of 6:52.798 and the Second Varsity Four was fourth with a time of 7:38.792.

“We had great racing from the squad today,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “We saw the overall racing skill of the team clearly develop from our first to our second race, so that is exciting to see. Tomorrow will provide another opportunity to fine tune our racing.”

The Hurricanes will be back in Lane 3 on Sunday morning, facing off against Minnesota, Notre Dame and Louisville. Miami’s Varsity 8 opens racing at 9:14 a.m., followed by the Varsity 4 at 9:22, Novice 8 at 9:30, Second Varsity 8 at 9:38 and the Second Varsity Four at 9:46.

Five Hurricane boats will compete in three sessions over two days at the seventh annual Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at the Melton Lake Rowing Venue. Miami is one of five ACC teams in the field at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational, joined by Clemson, Louisville, Notre Dame and Virginia, while Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Tennessee, Tulsa, Wisconsin and Yale complete the list of teams set to race this weekend.
 
Following this weekend’s action, the Canes will race against UCF and Wisconsin in Sarasota, Fla., on March 31. For a complete look at Miami’s schedule, click here.
