Rowing Wraps Up Cardinal Invitational

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — The University of Miami rowing team closed out its spring opener at the 2018 Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational Sunday.

The Hurricanes raced out of Lane 3 in Sunday morning’s final session of competition, facing off against Minnesota, Notre Dame and Louisville. Miami’s Varsity Eight finished fourth with a time of 6:15.481, while the Varsity Four placed fourth with a time of 7:08.410. The Canes’ Third Varsity Eight crossed the finish line in 6:53.540 to finish fourth in its final race, while the Second Varsity Eight also placed fourth with a time of 6:54.739 and the Second Varsity Four closed out the Hurricanes’ racing with a fifth place finish in 7:14.126.

“Overall, the team raced fairly well this weekend,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “We faced some of the fastest crews in the ACC and in the country and are coming away with a clearer picture of our boat speed and how we compare here in the early season. All the boats did a good job of learning and adjusting from race to race and now we need to continue to develop those skills and speed, across the entire team, as we move forward with the season.”

Five Hurricane boats competed in three sessions over two days at the seventh annual Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at the Melton Lake Rowing Venue. Miami was one of five ACC teams in the field at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational, joined by Clemson, Louisville, Notre Dame and Virginia, while Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Tennessee, Tulsa, Wisconsin and Yale completed the list of teams racing this weekend.

The Canes raced out of Lane 6 in the Saturday morning session, competing against Virginia, Yale and Michigan State. Miami’s Varsity Eight will be the first boat in the water, finishing fourth with a time of 6:26.823. The Varsity Four also was fourth with a time of 7:14.669, while the Third Varsity Eight was fifth with a time of 7:02.476. The Hurricanes’ Second Varsity 8 also finished fourth in their opening race, crossing the finish line in 6:41.029, while the Second Varsity Four placed fourth with a time of 7:13.691.

Miami returned to the water Saturday afternoon, racing out of Lane 3 against Notre Dame, Virginia and Tulsa. The Varsity Eight kicked off the afternoon session, finishing third with a time of 6:21.399. Miami’s Varsity Four was second in the afternoon session, posting a time of 7:20.104, while the Third Varsity Eight was third in its race with a time of 7:22.562. The Canes’ Second Varsity Eight was fourth in its race with a time of 6:52.798 and the Second Varsity Four was fourth with a time of 7:38.792.

“We had great racing from the squad today,” Sanderson said following Saturday’s action. “We saw the overall racing skill of the team clearly develop from our first to our second race, so that is exciting to see. Tomorrow will provide another opportunity to fine tune our racing.”

Following this weekend’s action, the Canes will race against UCF and Wisconsin in Sarasota, Fla., on March 31. For a complete look at Miami’s schedule, click here.
