Miami Beats Notre Dame in Extra Innings

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Miami Hurricanes hitters heated up in the cold conditions Sunday afternoon at Frank Eck Stadium.

Despite playing in sub-40-degree temperatures, Miami mounted its largest inning of the year and outlasted Notre Dame in extras.

Freshman Daniel Cuvet delivered the game-winning hit in the 10th inning, as the Hurricanes defeated the Fighting Irish, 12-10.

“Being down early, it was easy to give up and we didn’t,” head coach J.D. Arteaga said. “I’m proud of the guys for fighting until the end. We showed a lot of resilience.”

Cuvet’s single to right field pushed Miami (13-10, 5-4 ACC) ahead, 11-10, before sophomore Jason Torres provided insurance with a sacrifice fly two batters later.

“I knew I was the guy for that moment,” Cuvet said. “I knew we were going to hit and come back to win. That’s what this team does. We never quit.”

Freshman Nick Robert capped off the comeback victory, shutting down the Irish (14-9, 2-7 ACC) in the 10th. Robert earned his team-leading fifth win across a career-long three innings in relief.

Notre Dame right-hander Bennett Flynn (1-1) was tagged with the loss after surrendering both runs in extras.

The Fighting Irish jumped out to an early 7-1 lead, highlighted by a grand slam from graduate student David Glancy in the fourth.

The Hurricanes responded with a crooked number.

Miami sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring eight runs on five hits. Eight of the first nine Hurricanes reached safely, as senior Jacoby Long capped off the frame with a three-run homer.

“He threw me a hanging curveball and I didn’t miss it,” Long said. “We’ve already had nine comeback wins. We have that fight in us. We never think the game is over.”

In the win, all nine starting position players reached base for Miami, sparked by leadoff man Edgardo Villegas. Villegas tallied three hits and drew two walks to set the table for Cuvet and Torres.

The Hurricanes continued their road swing, as Miami visits crosstown foe FIU Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
