Abies Signs With Miami Women's Basketball

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami women’s basketball is excited to announce the signing of Daniela Abies, a 6-0 forward who comes to The U after two years at Wichita State University.

“When we looked at the portal and we were searching for a post player that would run through a wall, that had a motor, that was at a contagious, aggressive and competitive level, it became apparent that Dani was a target,” head coach Tricia Cullop said. “When you watch her attack the glass to get rebounds, post up and bury people, or step out and take shots, we knew that when we brought her on the visit we were all just praying she would say yes.”

Abies started 30 of 31 games for the Shockers last year, earning 2024 Third Team All-American Athletic Conference (AAC) honors. Four times she was named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll, while turning in 11 double-doubles and pacing Wichita State on the glass 24 times.

A native of Malaga, Spain, Abies averaged 13 points and 9.7 rebounds per game a year ago, shooting 48.6 percent from the floor over 29.9 minutes per game. Over two seasons in Kansas, Abies logged 57 appearances, 388 rebounds and 475 points.

“As we build the future of this program we are going to build it around people that will run through a wall,” Cullop said. “We know that she will come here with a chip on her shoulder, ready to prove herself in this league and I can’t wait for her to get started.”

Last year Abies scored a season-high 23 points to go with 10 rebounds against UAB, while breaking the WSU single-game rebounding record with 22 boards and 22 points in a conference tournament victory against Florida Atlantic. Abies played in 26 games as a true freshman, proving herself as a key post player in her first season of college ball.

Her prep career began with Salesianos San Bartolomé in Spain, joining the club team Miramar in 2018. After two seasons she joined Unicaja Málaga, leading her into her first selection to the Spanish National Team in 2021. Abies helped the Spanish U19 national team to a silver medal at the FIBA World Cup in the summer of 2023.
