UM's Skavronskaia Wins First Round Match at NCAA's

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - University of Miami All-American and 25th-ranked Lioudmila Skavronskaia won her first round match over Mississippi's Celeste Frey in a three-setter, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0, at the 1999 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex on the University of Florida campus.

Skavronskaia, a sophomore from Moscow, Russia, will play Arkansas' Chin Bee Khoo in the second round. Khoo defeated William & Mary's Tari Ann Toro to advance.

Skavronskaia played at No. 1 singles all season for the Hurricanes, where she forged a 28-5 overall record. So far this season, she has defeated 5th-ranked Ditta Huber of Southern California in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Team Championships and No. 7 Whitney Laiho of Florida.

Last year, Skavronskaia advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championships on her way to earning All-America honors.
