Miami Set to Compete at ITA Southeast Regionals

CORAL GABLES, Fla. Four members of the University of Miami women’s tennis team will take part in the ITA Southeast Regional Championships Presented by Oracle.

Junior Yuna Ito, senior Ana Madcur, freshman Lucia Marzal Martinez and junior Estela Perez-Somarriba will represent Miami at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex on the campus of Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

The first three will compete in singles, while third-ranked Perez-Somarriba will just participate in the doubles portion. Madcur and Marzal Martinez form one doubles pair for the Hurricanes, with Ito and Perez-Somarriba the other duo.

Qualifying action Thursday pared down the fields to 32 doubles teams and 64 singles players. Doubles action begins Friday at 9 a.m., with singles competition—the first of two rounds on the day—set to begin at approximately 11 a.m.

Draws for the ITA Southeast Regional Championships Presented by Oracle will be available Thursday evening.

Matches will begin at 9 a.m. each day, with the finals of each draw—main singles, main doubles, consolation singles and consolation doubles—the only contests scheduled for Monday.

The singles and doubles victors earn an automatic berth to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, held Nov. 7-11 in Surprise, Ariz. Perez-Somarriba has already clinched a singles bid based off her prior performances this fall.

Rather than one six-game set with a tiebreaker at six-all for doubles, the tournament will feature an eight-game pro set with a tiebreaker at seven-all and then will be best two-of-three regular sets in the final two rounds.
