ATLANTA The University of Miami women’s tennis team turned in a strong showing Saturday on their second day of action at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships Presented by Oracle.

The Hurricanes went 4-2, including 2-0 in singles, and added two more walkover victories at Georgia Tech’s Ken Byers Tennis Complex. Both doubles pairs beat ranked duos from Florida State and senior Ana Madcur registered a comeback victory to make the singles main draw quarterfinals.

“Madcur is playing senior tennis,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “She’s truly taking [what she leaned] the last three years and applying that to her matches. She’s being mature, humble and warrior-like all at the same time.”

The day began with an impressive showing by both of Miami’s doubles teams against Seminole pairs. Madcur and freshman Lucia Marzal Martinez logged a dominant 8-1 triumph over No. 58-ranked and third-seeded Andrea Garcia and Julia Mikulski.

Juniors Yuna Ito and Estela Perez-Somarriba followed that by defeating the top seed in the draw, No. 28-ranked Petra Hule and Ana Oparenovic, 8-5. It marked the third ranked doubles win of Perez-Somarriba’s career and the first of Ito’s at the Division I level.

Both Miami pairs then dropped their main draw quarterfinal matchups against ranked duos from Florida.

Madcur and Marzal Martinez fell, 3-8, to No. 38-ranked and sixth-seeded Tsveta Dimitrova and Ida Jarlskog. Meanwhile Ito and Perez-Somarriba came up short, 4-8, versus No. 57-ranked and eighth-seeded Victoria Emma and McCartney Kessler.

“Our doubles play is looking better all around,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We’re sticking with our game plans and executing on a more consistent basis.”

Madcur recorded her third singles win in two days in thrilling fashion, defeating Georgia Tech’s Dalila Said on her home court. After losing the first set, the San Juan, Argentina, native rallied to post a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Marzal Martinez, seeded third in the first-round consolation draw, also reached the quarterfinals of her draw. After advancing past Sara Kelly of FGCU via walkover, Marzal Martinez topped Florida State’s Nandini Das, 6-3, 6-2.

“Marzal Martinez took some steps forward tonight,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “She’s transitioning to a new system and it takes some time. I’m happy with her outlook and positivity this evening.”

Ito did not play her singles match Friday, as her second-round consolation draw opponent, No. 80 Hule, the draw’s second seed, withdrew and Ito advanced by walkover.

Sunday at 10:30 a.m., Madcur is set to take on No. 62 Kessler, seeded fourth, for a spot in the singles main draw semifinals.

At 11 a.m., Marzal Martinez will square off with the eighth seed in her draw, North Florida’s Ana Paula Melilo. Ito’s opponent and match time for Sunday are to be determined.
