Ableman Named ACC Female Diving Coach of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Miami diving coach Randy Ableman was recognized as the 2018 ACC Female Diving Coach of the Year, the conference office announced Thursday.

Ableman, in his 29th year at the helm of the Hurricanes diving program, last won ACC Women’s Diving Coach of the Year honors in 2013; he was named ACC Men’s Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2017.

This past season, Ableman helped lead senior Wally Layland to the third All-America honors of her career and guided redshirt freshman Alicia Blagg to a gold medal in the 3-meter springboard at the 2018 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships.

Ableman also helped junior Carolyn Chaney qualify for the first NCAA Championships bid of her career while coaching men’s divers David Dinsmore and Zach Cooper to All-America recognition last week at the NCAA Men’s Championships.

Layland took home a silver medal in the 3-meter at ACC Championships, as she teamed with Blagg to take the top-two honors in the event.

“It’s hard to put into words how amazing Randy is because he’s so accomplished in so many ways,” Layland said. “The only appropriate word to describe him is ‘legend.’ I am honored to have been coached by him for the past four years.”

Blagg, who will be representing her native Great Britain at the upcoming Commonwealth Games, said what separates Ableman is his passion.

“He is so passionate about making sure you become the best person and diver you can possibly be,” Blagg said.
