W. Tennis Inks Lucia Marzal Martinez

CORAL GABLES, Fla. University of Miami head women’s tennis coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews announced Monday the signing of Lucia Marzal Martinez to a National Letter of Intent.

A 5-foot-5-inch right-hander from Valencia, Spain, Marzal Martinez is 60-34 in her WTA singles career, dating back to October 2014.

“Lucia possesses the qualities we are looking for in a student-athlete at Miami,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “She’s mature, hardworking and understands where her priorities need to be moving forward. We are excited to help her achieve her goals. The team and coaching staff look forward to her arrival.”

Marzal Martinez currently checks in at No. 988 in the WTA international singles rankings and No. 1,207 on the doubles list. Her peak numbers are No. 984 in singles on March 5, 2018 and No. 1,180 in doubles on Sept. 11, 2017.

Of her 60 WTA victories, 28 are against players—from 11 countries—who have achieved a WTA ranking, including 11 who have reached the top 800, six the top 500, three the top 350 and two the top 280.

Twenty-one of her wins are versus players who are currently ranked, nine of whom are in the top 725, with three in the top 600. Additionally, 16 of the 60 were over players who were ranked at the time of the match, with six in the top 850, three in the top 700 and one as high as No. 481.

Marzal Martinez has reached the Round of 16 at seven $15,000 singles tournaments since May 2017, advancing to the quarterfinals of one in August 2017 and another the next month, both in Spain.

Prior to that, she made the Round of 16 in five $10,000 singles events between November 2015 and November 2016. Marzal Martinez earned two quarterfinal berths, including notching five victories to do so at Madrid 2 in June 2016.

Outside of her WTA successes, Marzal Martinez has won numerous titles at tournaments across Spain and made several other semifinal and final appearances. Her ledger includes a pair of titles at the Comunidad Valenciana Championship, a Nike Junior Tour Alicante trophy and a Magdalena Open championship.

Marzal Martinez, who attends Centro de Educación Específico a Distancia de la Comunidad Valenciana (CEEDCV), owns a 5-7 mark in WTA doubles matches.

Prior to choosing the Hurricanes, Marzal Martinez considered offers from schools such as Georgia, Georgia Tech, Ohio State and Pepperdine.

Marzal Martinez is the third Spaniard to ink with the Hurricanes in the last five years, following Silvia Fuentes (2014) and Estela Perez-Somarriba (2016).
