W. Tennis Opens ACC Championship with Virginia Tech

CORAL GABLES, Fla. After a double-bye, the University of Miami women’s tennis team begins ACC Championship play in the quarterfinals Friday morning in Cary, N.C.

Fourth-seeded Miami (15-6, 11-3 ACC), ranked No. 15, will meet No. 13-seed Virginia Tech at 9 a.m. at Cary Tennis Park. Live stats for the contest can be found HERE.

The Hurricanes are 19-1 all-time against the Hokies, but have never met in the ACC Championship or at any neutral site. Miami notched a 4-0 home victory on April 15 in the sides’ first matchup this year.

Through its first 13 ACC Championship appearances, Miami is 16-12 with nine semifinal berths, six title match trips and one championship. The Hurricanes are 6-2 when seeded fourth, reaching the finale in 2007, winning the crown in 2013 and making the semifinals last year.

Under the guidance of 17th-year head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews, Miami has two ranked singles players. Sophomore Estela Perez-Somarriba tops all ACC individuals at third nationally, while senior Sinead Lohan checks in at No. 64.

In doubles, Perez-Somarriba pairs with junior Ana Madcur in the No. 45 position and with junior Daniella Roldan in the No. 79 spot.

Virginia Tech is 14-11 (3-11 ACC) on the season after opening the ACC Championship with two wins. The Hokies downed No. 12-seed Louisville, 4-1, Wednesday in the opening round. They then recorded a 4-3 triumph over fifth-seeded and No. 17-ranked Florida State the next day in round two.

The Hokies’ lone ranked singles player is Natalie Novotna, who comes in at No. 71 in the country. They do not have any ranked doubles pairs.

The winner of Friday’s match plays either top-seeded and third-ranked Duke or No. 11-seeded and No. 34-ranked Wake Forest in the semifinals Saturday at 10 a.m.
