Cathrall Named Strength Coach for MBB

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami men’s basketball head coach Jim Larrañaga has announced the addition of Casey Cathrall as the team’s strength and conditioning coach. Cathrall will coordinate the strength and conditioning efforts for the Canes’ men’s basketball program and returns to Miami after earning his master’s degree from the University in 2014.

“Casey was a part of our ACC championship team in 2013 when he worked alongside of our head strength coach at the time, Jim Krumpos,” Larrañaga said. “Since that time, he has gained valuable experience in running his own programs at Louisiana Tech, UMBC and Dayton. We welcome Casey back and know he will do a tremendous job here.”

“I am beyond excited to be coming back to The U,” Cathrall said. “It’s my dream job. I cannot wait to hit the ground running and continue to build the program with Coach L and the rest of the staff.”

Cathrall returns to the Hurricanes after spending one year as the men’s basketball strength and conditioning coach at the University of Dayton. He also was responsible for strength and conditioning for the men’s and women’s tennis programs. Prior to that, he worked for two years as the director of basketball strength and conditioning at Louisiana Tech, where he was responsible for all aspects of strength and conditioning for 15 sports, including men’s and women’s basketball.

Cathrall served as the director of strength and conditioning at UMBC from June 2014 to April 2015. He worked primarily with men’s and women’s basketball and designed the UMBC Event Center’s varsity weight room.

Cathrall worked at Florida International University for the 2013-14 school year, primarily working with men’s and women’s basketball, football, baseball and women’s swimming and diving. He also earned an internship at the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Performance in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in the summer of 2013, assisting with the implementation of workouts for various tactical athletes, including FBI, local SWAT, military personnel and the Wounded Warrior Project.

During his time as a graduate student at Miami from 2012-13, Cathrall served as a full-time graduate strength and conditioning intern for the men’s basketball team during its ACC championship season. He also assisted with strength and conditioning for women’s basketball, women’s swimming and women’s soccer.

Cathrall earned his bachelor’s degree in Clinical Health Studies/Physical Therapy from Ithaca College in 2012 and his master’s degree in Exercise Physiology: Strength and Conditioning from Miami in 2014. He was named the NSCA’s Graduate Student of the Year in Strength and Conditioning in 2014.
