Gandara Releases 2018 Volleyball Schedule

CORAL GABLES, Fla., –The University of Miami volleyball program will host nine ACC home matches and the Sunshine State Challenge as part of its 2018 regular season schedule.

“We are excited about our schedule for 2018,” Miami head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara said. “We were able to find the right mix of both strength in the schedule and travel.”

Miami will open up regular season play hosting the two-day Sunshine State Challenge on Aug. 24 and 25. The Canes will begin the season on August 24 at 7 p.m., against FAU. Miami will return to play UCF on August 25 at 11 a.m., and conclude the tournament against FGCU at 7:30 p.m., that night. The Sunshine State Challenge features six matches played over two days at the James L. Knight Sports Complex. It is the first of three non-conference tournaments on the Canes 2018 schedule.

The Canes will go on the road for the first time when they travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico for the Puerto Rico Invitational from Aug. 31- Sept. 1. Miami will face Missouri on Aug. 31, at 8 p.m., and finish the Invitational the following day on Sept. 1 against Towson at 8 p.m. Gandara, a Puerto Rico native, is thrilled about the opportunity Miami has to play in his home country.

“Of course going to play in Puerto Rico is special to me for obvious reasons, but we will play a pair of competitive matches in a great volleyball atmosphere,” Gandara said. “There will be great crowds and it will be a great experience for our players.”

The following week will see Miami on the road again at Texas A&M Corpus Christi for two road matches. Miami will play Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Sept. 7 (time TBA) and play the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Sept. 8, at 1:30 p.m. The two matches in Corpus Christi will conclude the Canes 4-match road streak.

The Canes will return home the following week to host LIU Brooklyn for two matches. The first match on Sept. 14 is set for 6 p.m. and the final non-conference match of the season on Sept. 15 is at 2 p.m.

“We feel fortunate to end the non-conference portion of our schedule at home leading into another tough ACC schedule,” Gandara said.

After a nine non-conference matches, the Canes enter an ACC slate that features nine home matches and nine away matches. For the second straight season, the Canes will open ACC play at home and host Wake Forest on Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. Two days later, the Canes host Duke (Sept. 23) at 2 p.m.

The Canes hit the road for two matches to conclude the month of September at Pitt on Sept. 28 at 7 p.m., and at Virginia on Sept. 30 at noon.
