Canes NBA Summer League Recap

LAS VEGAS – The University of Miami was well represented in the 2018 NBA Summer League, with six Hurricane alums competing in the league, which ran July 2-5 in Salt Lake City and Sacramento and July 6-17 in Las Vegas. Lonnie Walker IV and Trey McKinney Jones (San Antonio Spurs), Bruce Brown, Jr. (Detroit Pistons), Rion Brown (Golden State Warriors), Kamari Murphy (Brooklyn Nets) and Davon Reed (Phoenix Suns) each earned significant playing time in the league.
 
Three of the UM alums averaged double-figure scoring, with Davon Reed leading the group at 13.4 points per game.
 
A look at how each of the former Canes performed:
 
Bruce Brown, Detroit Pistons
6 GP, 30.3 MPG, 11.8 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 3.0 APG, 1.7 SPG
The 42nd overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, Brown showcased his all-around game throughout the summer league and was second on the Pistons in scoring and assists while leading the team in rebounding. He had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds and added six assists in five steals in a July 11 win over Minnesota. The Pistons reached the quarterfinals in the tournament before being ousted by the Los Angeles Lakers.
 

 
Lonnie Walker, San Antonio Spurs
4 GP, 27.8 MPG, 11.5 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 1.5 APG, 1.3 SPG
The No. 18 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, Walker, was third on the team in scoring and rebounding. He led the team in minutes per game. Walker scored 14 points with five rebounds and three steals in a July 11 win over the Washington Wizards.
 

 
Davon Reed, Phoenix Suns
5 GP, 25.0 MPG, 13.4 PPG, 49% FG, 4.4 RPG, 3.0 APG
Reed had a strong summer league, finishing second on the team in scoring. He scored a team-high 18 points of 7-of-8 shooting, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, in a win over the Dallas Mavericks on July 7.
 

 
Trey McKinney Jones, San Antonio Spurs
5 GP, 23.2 MPG, 7.6 PPG, 2.8 RPG
McKinney Jones played in all five of the Spurs’ summer league games and finished fifth on the team in scoring. He recorded 11 points on July 10 against the Memphis Grizzlies.
 
Kamari Murphy, Brooklyn Nets
5 GP, 17.4 MPG, 5.0 PPG, 4.6 RPG
Murphy played in all five of the Nets’ summer games. He had a near-double-double on July 10 against the Minnesota Timberwolves with eight points and 10 rebounds.  
 
Rion Brown, Golden State Warriors
4 GP, 15.5 MPG, 4.0 PPG, 2.0 RPG
Brown played in four games for Golden State. He scored 13 points in 27 minutes in the Warriors’ July 11 game against the Charlotte Hornets.
