Gauthier Selected to Rimington Trophy Watch List

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami senior Tyler Gauthier was named to the 2018 Fall Watch List for the Rimington Trophy, presented annually to the most outstanding center in NCAA Division I football, it was announced Friday by the Boomer Esiason Foundation.

The preseason honor is the first for Gauthier and the fifth major award watch list to include a Hurricane this preseason.

Gauthier started all 13 games at center for the Hurricanes in 2018, extending his personal streak of 17 straight starts on the offensive line that dates to 2016. The Venice, Fla., native helped anchor a Hurricanes offensive line unit that paved the way for 2,090 rushing yards (160.8 yards per game) and 3,153 passing yards (242.5 yards per game). An Honorable Mention All-ACC selection a season ago, Gauthier was one of eight players named to the watch list from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Gauthier joins sophomore  Travis Homer, who was named to the watch list for both the Maxwell Award (college football’s player of the year) and the Doak Walker Award (top running back), junior Ahmmon Richards (Maxwell Award and Biletnikoff Award as nation’s best receiver), senior safety Jaquan Johnson (Bednarik Award as nation’s top defensive player) and junior linebacker Shaq Quarterman (Bednarik) as preseason honorees.
Brett Romberg (2002) is the only Rimington Trophy winner in program history.

Since its inception, the seventeen-year old award has raised over $3.6 million for the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which is committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis.
Dave Rimington, the award’s namesake, was a consensus first-team All-America center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the John Outland Trophy’s only two-time winner as the nation’s finest college interior lineman.
