Volleyball Sweeps FIU 3-0 in Exhibition Match

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami volleyball team won its exhibition match over FIU, 3-0, Saturday at the Knight Sports Complex.

The Canes swept the Panthers in three sets, 25-22, 25-15 and 25-18. Miami head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara was happy with how his team performed in their first competition against another opponent.

“I liked that we were composed and managed our emotions of the first match really well,” Gandara said. “We learned a lot about our team, but it was a really good experience and a positive night for us moving forward.”

For redshirt senior Haley Templeton, getting back in “The Knight” was the perfect way to start her final season as a Cane.

“It meant a lot for us to play FIU tonight at home because we haven’t done that before,” Templeton said. “It was a lot of fun, especially for the freshman because it allowed them to get used to what a game is like here.”

The 2018 roster features seven freshmen, including Maya Sullivan who experienced her first match in a Canes uniform on Saturday.

“It felt amazing,” Sullivan said. “That would be the word to describe it. It felt good to play with a bunch of girls who support me no matter what I do and who will always be there and have my back.”

The Canes will open nonconference play on Aug. 24–25, hosting the 2018 Sunshine State Challenge. Miami will begin the two-day tournament against FAU on Friday, August 24 at 7 p.m., and will return Saturday to face FGCU at 11 a.m., and conclude the tournament against UCF at 7:30 p.m.

All Hurricanes volleyball home matches are played at the James L. Knight Sports Complex on the University of Miami campus. Admission is free.

The University of Miami – Coral Gables Campus has introduced an updated parking policy for the 2018-19 school year. Enforcement is now extended to seven days a week, 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. PayByPhone and additional pay stations are available across all campus parking lots and garages to facilitate visitor parking.
