Volleyball Falls Short to BC Despite Career Highs

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – In a day full of career highs, the Miami volleyball team dropped its first five-set match of the season to Boston College, 3-2.

Redshirt junior Elizaveta Lukianova tied her career high with 24 kills, hitting .333 in Sunday’s match, but the Eagles edged the Canes for the first time since 2007. Sunday’s defeat was just the third time in program history Miami has lost to Boston College.

The Eagles jumped out to the early 1-0 lead, hitting .500 while holding Miami to just .083. They were able to spread their offense around, having six different players record at least one kill. Lukinova led the Canes in the first with five kills, hitting .714 to end the first. Boston College won the set, 25-16.

Miami evened the score, taking the second set, 25-19. Lukianova continued to be a threat on offense, adding five more kills, but it was Miami’s serving that led them to the set win. Janet Kalaniuvalu registered two of her season-high three aces, while Amanda Falck and Priscilla Hernandez each recorded one. Miami totaled four in the set, helping the Canes record a season-high 12 aces.

The Canes took set three, 25-23, hitting a set-high .294. Lukianova notched an additional five kills, while freshman Savannah Vach tallied 11 of her 51 assists. Vach’s 51 assists is the Oviedo, Fla., native’s third-most assists in a match this season. Along with her assists, Vach recorded 12 digs to produce her first double-double of her career and four aces, which also was a career-high. Miami held Boston College to its lowest hitting percentage in the third to help take the 2-1 lead.

Miami held off four Boston College set points, but the Eagles took the fourth set 28-26 to tie the match at two. The Eagles recorded four team blocks and matched Miami’s three aces to force the fifth set.

Boston College took an early 6-2 lead in the fifth before a Canes’ timeout. Lukianova added her final four kills of the match, but the Eagles took the final four points of the match to snap Miami’s 18-match win streak against them, winning 15-8.

Miami travels to Clemson on Oct. 25 for its next ACC match.
