Novice Boat Shines in Final Fall Race

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami rowing team closed out its fall slate on Sunday at the Rivanna Romp in Earlysville, Va.

“The highlight of the racing was our freshman eight,” head coach Dave Sanderson said. “They did an outstanding job racing today. It is really the only opportunity they’ll get to race as freshman, against other freshman, and they took full advantage of the opportunity.”

The Miami novice boat raced against 10 other boats, finishing in a time of 15:11.8, good for a fourth place showing. The 1v8 (14:50.8) and 2v8 (15:20.7) boats finished the race in 17th and 19th, respectively.

“Our varsity crews were off the pace today,” Sanderson said. “That’s not to say that there were not some positive takeaways from the varsity racing, but we just need to acknowledge that we have gaps that we have to close to be ready for ACCs in May.”

The Hurricanes will spend the winter getting ready for their spring schedule, which kicks off at the Cardinal Invite in Oak Ridge, Tenn. on March 14, 2020.
