Golf Set To Compete at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami golf team heads to the Big Easy to open competition Sunday at the 2019 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championships, hosted by Tulane University. This year’s event will take place at the par 72, 6,239-yard English Turn Golf and Country Club.

The tournament will consist of 54 holes over a three-day stretch, with No. 25 Miami teeing off on Sunday at 11:28 a.m. ET, on hole 10 alongside Michigan State and ACC foe North Carolina.  Action will continue Monday morning, before the field of 18 wrap up play on Tuesday. A quintet of Hurricanes, graduate student Claudia De Antonio, juniors Macarena Aguilera and Renate Grimstad, sophomore Kristyna Frydlova and freshman Anna Backman, will make the trip to New Orleans.

Competing at the UCF Challenge on Feb. 3-5, the Hurricanes finished with a three-round total score of 15-under, 849, tying then-No. 10 Kent State for second place in the tournament. The Hurricanes were led by Backman, who capped a strong showing in her first complete collegiate tournament with a first-place finish. The freshman collected 13 birdies over the 54 holes to card an 11-under, 205.

Following her strong performance, the Vääksy, Finland, native ranks among the top five in a pair of national polls. The freshman is rated third among collegiate golfers on golfstat.com, while the first spring Arnold Palmer Cup Rankings lists Backman third among International golfers. As a team, the Hurricanes jumped two spots in Tuesday’s golfstat.com rankings, to enter the weekend ranked No. 25.

Last season, the Hurricanes placed ninth in the New Orleans event with a three-day tally of 899. Grimstad closed out the event in a tie for 11th with a 222, while Frydlova tied for 22nd with a 225.

Beginning Sunday, the Hurricanes are set to square off against a loaded tournament field including eight teams listed in the top 25 on golfstat.com. The full list includes, No. 14 Arizona State, No. 11 Auburn, No. 5 Duke, No. 8 Florida, No. 47 Houston, No. 62 LSU, No. 27 Michigan State, No. 34 North Carolina, No. 66 NC State, No. 63 Oklahoma State, No. 54 SMU, No. 16 South Carolina, No. 3 Texas,  No. 92 Tulane, No. 40 UC Davis, No. 1 USC and No. 18 Washington.

Following the conclusion of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Miami will take an 18 day break from tournament play before competing in the Sun Trust Gator Invitational March 9-10 in Gainesville, Fla.
