Aubone and Bastias Named ACC Doubles Team of the Week

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the second straight week, a pair of University of Miami men’s tennis student-athletes garnered ACC Doubles Team of the Week accolades, as announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.

Going a perfect 5-0 in doubles action, freshmen Franco Aubone and Francisco Bastias collected Miami’s (14-4, 5-0 ACC) fifth weekly honor of the year, a new program record.

Continuing to form an impressive chemistry on the court, the natives of Argentina carried the Hurricanes to five advantageous doubles points over a five-match stretch.

Opening with Tuesday’s non-conference showdowns against UNCW and Boston University, the duo cruised past both team’s pairs, 6-2 and 6-3, respectively.

In a conference battle with then-No. 11 Notre Dame, Aubone and Bastias dominated Guillermo Cabrera and William Howells, 6-2, to clinch the doubles point, which proved to be significant in a back-and-forth 4-3 victory, the program’s first win over a top-15 opponent since defeating No. 14 Duke on April 16, 2010.

On Sunday, the duo added two more wins to their résumé, including a conference win over Boston College’s Conor Mullins and Markus Nordby, improving to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in conference action since teaming up for the first time on Feb. 8, 2019. The only match Aubone and Bastias have not finished since competing alongside one another, the duo led 5-4 before the doubles point was clinched against Utah on Feb. 9.

The honor marks the third time in program history a UM pair has earned the weekly honor and the second in as many weeks. On March 12, sophomores Tatsuki Shimamoto and Adria Soriano Barrera secured the award.

Up next, the Hurricanes will hit the road for a pair of ACC contests, beginning with a trip to Durham, N.C., on Friday at 5 p.m. to face Duke. Miami will then battle No. 11 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
