Atherley Earns Second ACC Performer of Week Honor

CORAL GABLES, Fla. –  Michelle Atherley earned the University of Miami track and field program’s fourth ACC outdoor honor of the season, after being named the Women’s Field Performer of the Week, as announced by the conference office Wednesday morning.

The North Port, Fla., native garnered her second conference distinction of the 2019 season after winning the women’s heptathlon with a Miami program-record 5,966 points. Atherley’s score leads the ACC and currently ranks as the second-best score in the NCAA.

Atherley led the heptathlon from the get go at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational, winning the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 13.16 seconds. The 2019 NCAA Women’s Pentathlon Champion went on to finish second in the high jump, first in the shot put and first in the 200m dash, posting a personal-best time of 23.97 seconds.

She began the second day of the heptathlon by winning the women’s long jump, placing fourth in the javelin and closed out the competition with a first-place finish in the women’s 800m run.

Atherley earned the same award during the indoor season on Jan. 31, after posting the nation’s second-best score in the pentathlon.

The Canes and Atherley will have one week off before returning to Gainesville, Fla., for the Tom Jones Memorial April 26-27.
