Soriano Barrera Selected to NCAA Singles Championship

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Subcommittee has selected University of Miami sophomore Adria Soriano Barrera as one of the 64 singles players that will compete in the 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship.

The singles competition will be conducted May 20-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando following the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 16-19.

The full tournament brackets will be announced one day before competition starts. To see the complete lists of selections, click HERE.

Soriano Barrera is the first Hurricane to be selected for the NCAA Singles Championship since 2016, when Piotr Lomacki represented Miami in the tournament, and just the third Cane in a decade to earn a berth, as Daniel Vallverdu participated in 2009. Omar Aly was picked as an alternate for the tournament in 2014 and Lomacki in 2017, although neither played in the event.

Soriano Barrera is one of 10 total student-athletes from the Atlantic Coast Conference to be selected for the Championship.

Miami’s sophomore opened the spring season ranked No. 21 in ITA singles and ended at No. 32 following the ACC Championship. He was ranked in the top 60 for all 27 of his singles matches this spring, rising as high as No. 13, and was recently tabbed to the All-ACC Second Team.

Competing at the top of the Hurricanes’ singles lineup, Soriano Barrera boasts a team-high 21 wins during his sophomore campaign and a 13-9 mark during the spring. The Barcelona, Spain, native owns six spring victories against ranked opponents, including a pair of top-25 triumphs over then-fourth-ranked Christian Sigsgaard of Texas and No. 21 Alexis Galarneau of NC State.

Battling then-No. 75 Nick Stachowiak of Duke on March 24, the sophomore secured a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) win to clinch a 4-3 comeback victory against the Blue Devils.

Last season, the sophomore teamed up with Christian Langmo in the NCAA Doubles Championship and reached the Round of 16, becoming the first Miami duo to make the tournament since Daniel Vallverdu and Carl Sundberg earned a bid in 2008.

Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for eligible/entered singles players.  For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125 eligible/entered singles players, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have a minimum of 13 started singles matches, with six matches in the spring, in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
