Soriano Barrera’s Season Ends at NCAA Championship

HIGHLIGHTS

ORLANDO – University of Miami men’s tennis sophomore Adria Soriano Barrera came up short Monday night in the Round of 64 at the 2019 NCAA Singles Championship, held at the USTA National Campus.

Facing the nation’s second-ranked singles player and highest-ranked collegian in the ATP, No. 268, JJ Wolf of Ohio State, the Barcelona, Spain, native dropped a competitive, 2-6, 3-6, match.

Looking to hold at deuce in the opening game, a strong return by Wolf placed the Buckeye in front early, 1-0. Two games later, Soriano Barrera followed up with a deuce point of his own to pull back within one, 1-2.

Following three consecutive games won by Wolf, Soriano Barrera fended off a set point on his serve, but was unable to mount a comeback on a break point.

Looking to force a third set, the Miami sophomore claimed the opening game of the second.

Later, facing a 1-2 deficit in the set, he picked up his first break point of the match to even the score at two apiece.

Despite picking up a crucial ace in the seventh game, it was not enough as Wolf claimed the eighth and ninth games to seal the victory, 6-2, 6-3.

Soriano Barrera ends the spring season with a 13-10 mark and a 21-14 overall record in his second campaign at The U.

He claimed six victories against ranked opponents this spring, including a pair of top-25 triumphs over then-fourth-ranked Christian Sigsgaard of Texas and then-No. 21 Alexis Galarneau of NC State.

Soriano Barrera opened the spring season ranked No. 21 in ITA singles and entered the tournament at No. 33. He ranked among the top 60 in every singles match he competed in during the 2018-19 season, rising as high as No. 13, and was recently tabbed to the All-ACC Second Team.

He was only the second Hurricane to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship over the past decade, joining Piotr Lomacki (2016).
