Chris McMahon Invited to USA Baseball Training Camp

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami Hurricanes’ pitcher Chris McMahon was selected to participate in the 2019 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team training camp.

McMahon will travel to Cary, N.C., to take part in the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp, which runs from June 27 to July 1.

The sophomore right-hander earned an invitation to training camp after an impressive second season with the Hurricanes. McMahon went 3-2 with a 3.72 ERA over 12 starts in 2019. Primarily serving as the Canes’ Saturday starter, the West Chester, Pa., native struck out 67 batters and walked just 23 over 60.1 innings pitched.

McMahon’s sophomore season featured several highlights, including a win over Rutgers on Feb. 16 in which he tossed 5.1 innings of three-hit, one-run ball. He also struck out seven over 6.2 innings at Florida (Feb. 23) and fanned a season-high 10 batters while allowing just one unearned run on three hits over six innings against UMBC (Mar. 2). His best start of the season came against rival Florida State on April 6, allowing just three hits over seven shutout innings while striking out nine in a victory over the Seminoles.

The USA Baseball Collegiate National Team participants will compete in series of four intrasquad exhibition games and one contest against the Coastal Plain League Select before announcing a 26-man roster prior to the eighth USA vs. Cuba International Friendship Series that will take place July 2-6 in Cary, Charlotte, Durham and Hickory, North Carolina.

If selected to the 26-man roster, McMahon will become the 26th Miami player to join the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. The last time a UM player participated was 2014, when Hurricanes’ standout, future first-round pick and current Chicago White Sox catcher Zack Collins played for Team USA.

Howie Shapiro in 1978 was the first Hurricanes picked for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. Future MLB standouts Alex Fernandez (1988-89), Charles Johnson (1991-92), Danny Graves (1993), Pat Burrell (1997), Jon Jay (2005), Chris Perez (2005) and Yasmani Grandal (2009) headline the group of Hurricanes that have combined for 29 all-time Miami selections to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.

Team USA’s 26-man roster will travel to Taiwan for the 19th USA vs. Chinese Taipei International Friendship Series, after which USA Baseball will announce a final 24-man roster to compete in the 43rd USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series from July 16-21 in Japan.
