McCloud Named to Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Senior linebacker Zach McCloud was among those players named to the watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy, known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service.”

The Wuerffel Trophy is presented each February in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. The trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

McCloud, an active member of the University of Miami’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), has played an important role in organizing and orchestrating community services events for Miami student-athletes across all sports. In 2018-19, he served as the community service & campus engagement coordinator for SAAC.

McCloud saw action in each of Miami’s 13 games a season ago, finishing with 44 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss. McCloud, who has played in all 39 games since arriving on campus as a freshman in 2016, has totaled 129 tackles and 12.5 tackles for loss. The Lantana, Fla., native has made 31 starts across his impressive career.

Nominations for the Wuerffel Trophy are made by the respective universities’ sports information departments and will close Oct. 15. A current list of nominees can be found at www.wuerffeltrophy.org beginning Aug. 1. Semifinalists for the award will be announced Nov. 5 and finalists will be announced on Nov. 18.

The formal announcement of the 2019 recipient will be made at the National Football Foundation’s festivities in New York City Dec. 10. The presentation of the 2019 Wuerffel Trophy will occur at the 51st All Sports Association Awards Banquet Feb. 14, 2020 in Fort Walton Beach

The Wuerffel Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football.  Founded in 1997, the NCFAA and its 25 awards now boast more than 800 recipients, dating back to 1935.  Visit www.ncfaa.org to learn more about the association.
