Wong Earns USBWA All-America Honorable Mention Status

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Isaiah Wong of the University of Miami men’s basketball team is a 2022-23 United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-America Honorable Mention, as announced Wednesday afternoon.

The Division I USBWA All-Americans are voted on by college basketball journalists across the country. Honorees are sorted into three teams of five, followed by four honorable mention choices. In total, Wong is one of just 19 players nationally who made the list.

The accolade for Wong comes hours after he picked up National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Third Team All-America designation and one day after he earned Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention status.

All four publications utilized to determine consensus All-America teams—AP, NABC, The Sporting News and USBWA—have now released their lists. Wong garnered Honorable Mention status or better on three of them, one of just 17 players to do so. Only 20 individuals made the cut for even one.

A fourth-year junior guard, Wong also earned ACC Player of the Year honors this season. He is among 16 finalists for the John R. Wooden Award, as well as one of 25 finalists for the Lute Olson Award and one of five for the Jerry West Award.

The Piscataway, N.J., native is the second player in program history to register All-America accolades of any kind from the USBWA, which did not begin naming even third-team selections until 2018-19. Wong joins Rick Barry, a 1964-65 First Team All-American, on that list.

This season, Wong, who helped the Hurricanes earn a share of the ACC regular season title, is averaging 16.2 points, 3.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game, all of which are team bests, to go along with 4.3 rebounds per outing. He is shooting 45.3 percent from the field, 37.8 percent on 3-pointers and 83.6 percent from the line.

Wong and fifth-seeded Miami start NCAA Tournament play Friday at 7:25 p.m., when they square off with No. 12-seeded Drake at MVP Arena in Albany, N.Y., live on TBS.
