Cecconi Becomes 66th Hurricane to Reach Major Leagues

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Former Miami Hurricanes right-handed pitcher Slade Cecconi was called up from Triple-A Reno by the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday.

Cecconi, who played for the Hurricanes from 2019-2020, recorded 231 strikeouts across 45 starts between Double-A Amarillo and Triple-A Reno since the start of the 2022 season. The 24-year-old is ranked as the No. 9 prospect in the organization, according to MLB Pipeline.

With the promotion, Cecconi becomes the 66th Miami player to make it to the big leagues.

Prior to being chosen by the Diamondbacks in the first round, Cecconi notched a 7-5 mark with a 4.09 ERA in 17 starts at The U. The 6-foot-4 hurler was tabbed a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American in 2019 before tallying a 3.80 ERA in the shortened 2020 season.

Cecconi is expected to start for the Diamondbacks against the San Francisco Giants Wednesday evening at Oracle Park. First pitch is scheduled for 9:45 p.m.
