Miami Drops 4-3 Battle To Virginia Tech

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team dropped the ACC battle to Virginia Tech, 4-3, on Sunday evening at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

The Hokies opened the match with a clinched doubles point. VT’s Ryan Fishback and Maxime St. Hilaire grabbed the top court, 6-3, over No. 64 Vladislav Melnic and Adrien Burdet. Miami’s No. 70 duo of Antonio Prat and Martin Katz evened the doubles score with a 6-3 win against Matt Harper and Alberto Orso on court two. For the opening point, VT’s Alex Ix and Michael Shepheard took court three, 6-3, over Sam Baumgartner and Alejandro Arraya to secure the point.

Besides Virginia Tech’s Alberto Orso taking down newcomer Alejandro Arraya, 6-0, 6-0, on court six, Miami notched three consecutive courts to get ahead. Melnic claimed court three over Shepheard, 6-2, 6-3, Katz took court two against St. Hilaire, 6-3, 6-0, and Prat grabbed a ranked win, 6-4, 6-1, over No. 65 Fishback at the top court.

Despite opening singles strong, the Hokies went on to clinch the match with back-to-back courts. Burdet fell 7-6 (4), 6-2, to Hugo Maia on court four, while Benjamin Pomeranets took the last court, 7-6 (4), 6-3 over Baumgartner.

The Hurricanes will head to Clemson, S.C., on March 28 to face Clemson, before heading to Atlanta, Ga., to take on Georgia Tech on March 30.
