Hurricanes Top Panthers, 14-7
MIAMI — The University of Miami took care of business.
In a backyard battle against crosstown foe FIU, the Hurricanes put up a crooked number in the seventh to beat the Panthers, 14-7, at FIU Baseball Stadium Tuesday evening.
The Hurricanes (14-10) scored six runs on three hits, as Miami sent 12 batters to the plate in the pivotal seventh inning.
Catcher Carlos Perez worked a bases-loaded walk to put the Hurricanes ahead, 8-7, before center fielder Jacoby Long padded the lead with a two-run double down the left field line.
As they had done all night, the Hurricanes put pressure on the Panthers (13-12).
JD Urso followed with a safety squeeze to push the advantage to four.
With runners on the corners, Urso ran into the middle of first and second to force a rundown. While Urso caught the attention of FIU’s defense, Long scampered 90 feet to steal home.
Following the six-run frame, relievers Chris Scinta (1-0), Brian Walters and Myles Caba teamed up to retire eight of the final 10 batters to secure the Hurricanes’ 12th straight victory over FIU.
Miami mounted runs in three of the first four frames, as the Hurricanes stormed out to a narrow 6-5 lead.
The Panthers responded, grabbing a one-run advantage heading into the seventh.
With eight tallies across the final three innings, Miami notched its 10th come-from-behind victory.
In the win, the Hurricanes finished with a season-high three stolen bases, including two of home by Urso and Long in the fourth and seventh, respectively.
Up next, Miami welcomes No. 3 Clemson to Mark Light Field. The three-game set is slated to begin at 7 p.m. Thursday.
