W. Tennis Opens Season with Miami Spring Invite

CORAL GABLES, Fla. The University of Miami women’s tennis team will begin its 2018 spring season this weekend on its home court.

The Hurricanes, ranked No. 19 in the nation, are set to host the three-day Miami Spring Invite Friday through Sunday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

Joining Miami in the field are second-ranked Vanderbilt, No. 13 Ohio State and No. 21 Kentucky. The Commodores and Buckeyes both reached the Final Four a year ago.

Each day, doubles will start at 9 a.m., and then singles action proceeds that no earlier than 9:45 a.m. Live stats for the Miami Spring Invite will be available HERE throughout the weekend.

Miami features two nationally-ranked singles players in reigning First Team All-ACC selections, No. 36 Estela Perez-Somarriba and No. 41 Sinead Lohan. Perez-Somarriba, a sophomore, reached the 2017 NCAA Singles Championship semifinals, while Lohan, a senior, did so the year before.

Vanderbilt, the 2015 national champion, has three players on the ITA singles list in fourth-ranked Fernanda Contreras, No. 19 Christina Rosca and No. 96 Summer Dvorak, as well as 2017 SEC Player of the Year Astra Sharma. In addition, Emma Kurtz pairs with Rosca at No. 19 in the doubles rankings and with Emily Smith at No. 43 in doubles.

Ohio State has one ranked singles player in No. 80 Shiroi Fukuda. In addition, Fukuda teams with Maria Tyrina at No. 30 in doubles. The Buckeyes have a second ranked doubles pair in Anna Sanford and Olivia Sneed at No. 49.
Kentucky has one nationally-ranked player, as Akvile Parazinskaite checks in at No. 26 in the ITA’s list.

After the Miami Spring Invite, the Hurricanes begin dual match play Jan. 27 at noon against UC Santa Barbara in Auburn, Ala., as a part of ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
