W. Tennis Heads to No. 21 Virginia and No. 4 Duke

CORAL GABLES, Fla. The University of Miami women’s tennis team hits the road this weekend for a pair of top-25 matchups.

First, No. 19 Miami (9-4, 5-1 ACC) takes on No. 21 Virginia Friday at 3 p.m., at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. The Hurricanes then travel to Durham, N.C., to face fourth-ranked Duke Sunday at noon at Ambler Tennis Stadium.

The Hurricanes sport a 17-5 all-time record against Virginia, including an 11-2 mark in the last 13 outings, with three straight wins. Miami is 5-2 on the road versus the Cavaliers, including tallying a 4-2 road triumph last season on April 23, 2017.

In 27 meetings with Duke, Miami is 12-15 overall and 3-5 on the road. Most recently, the Hurricanes dropped a 5-2 home decision a season ago on March 19, 2017.

Under the guidance of 17th-year head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews, Miami is 7-1 in its past eight matches and has two ranked singles players. Sophomore Estela Perez-Somarriba is a career-best ninth nationally, while senior Sinead Lohan holds the No. 71 spot.

The Hurricanes also have two ranked doubles duos, both featuring junior Ana Madcur. She teams with Perez-Somarriba in the No. 38 position and places No. 50 with Lohan.

Virginia is 9-4 (4-2 ACC) thus far in 2018 after winning eight of its last 10 contests. The Cavaliers’ lone ranked singles player is No. 74 Rosie Johanson. She is also part of the team’s ranked doubles pair, joining with Meghan Kelley to form the No. 12 team in the country.

Duke has a 12-1 (6-0 ACC) record this season and has shut out five straight opponents for the first time in 19 years. Five Blue Devils are on the Oracle/ITA singles list, headlined by the seventh-ranked Samantha Harris, who leads all ACC players. She is joined by No. 29 Kelly Chen, No. 60 Meible Chi, No. 69 Kaitlyn McCarthy and No. 73 Ellyse Hamlin.

The Blue Devils are the only team with two top-10 doubles pars, with Harris and Chen placing fifth followed by Hamlin and McCarthy at sixth.

Following its matchups with the Cavaliers and blue Devils, Miami will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., to square off against No. 14 Wake Forest March 31 at noon.
